Our Philosophy

Everyone learns differently. Teachers are tasked with relaying information to a wide range of learning styles and abilities in a limited amount of time. This can lead to confusion and anxiety for many learners. At RM Tutoring, we customize our teaching to accommodate the pace and learning style of each student. This helps them to understand better, reduce stress, and build confidence.

RM Tutoring implements the following techniques to take the teaching to the next level:

Process over Problem

The problem at hand is not the primary focus. The focus is on understanding the root of the process of the problem, that in turn can be applied to a wide variety of different styled questions.

Micro-Testing/Repetition

When doing a new problem for the first time, we show how to do the problem, then have the student attempt to re-do the same problem on their own without any notes/help. If they can successfully complete it on their own, it’s time to move forward. If not, it is re-explained/reviewed, and then attempted again on their own. Once the student can fully complete the problem on their own, we move to a new, but similar question. This creates a stepping stone process to building long-term connections in the brain.

This is the same for memorization of concepts and processes. After a new concept has been taught, the student may be briefly quizzed several times throughout the session on that concept. This helps to keep it fresh, and ensures that something that was just taught was not immediately forgotten. It also increases focus, as the student knows they could be asked to repeat anything that has been reviewed.

‘You Teach Me’ Method

The ‘You Teach Me’ method is a simple but effective method, based on the premise that if you can teach it, you know it. When a student is feeling more confident about a topic or question, we will reverse roles in a sense, and have them walk us through a question as if they are teaching. This allows both the student and the tutor to see the level of understanding, as well as to pinpoint any specific parts that may not be fully understood along the way.

Understanding not only ‘How’, but ‘Why’

How the problem is done is important, but understanding why it is done is truly the goal. Knowing the reasoning allows the student to build an inner working web of knowledge that will grow as they continue to make connections.

Learning Style Analysis

Students learning styles are analyzed and understood to allow for the information to be tailored and taught in the most effective way possible.
